Lake Chelan ranked No. 10 vacation in U.S.A.Lake Chelan has been named the No. 10 lake vacation in the U.S.A. by Yahoo Travel. The Washington lake was named because of its beauty, lake activities and nearby attractions such as the many local wineries.
The annual ranking includes such places as Lake Tahoe (ranked No. 1), Shasta Lake, Big Bear Lake and other well-known lakes throughout the country.
Lake Chelan is 55 miles long and the town of Chelan at the southeast end has a tourist infrastructure that includes many types of lodgings, wineries, restaurants, watercraft rentals, parks, trails and other attributes that keep people coming back to Lake Chelan for vacation each summer. The area is a popular destination for residents of the Seattle area, about a three-hour drive away.
Further up lake, there is Lake Chelan State Park as well as parks and campsites for boaters who travel up lake. At the northwestern end of the lake is Stehekin, a small town that can be reached only by boat or plane. It's considered a gateway to the North Cascades where there are abundant hiking trails.
The Lady of the Lake offers a cruise to Stehekin and there is an air service that offers floatplane transportation between Chelan and Stehekin.
About 35 miles form Lake Chelan is Wenatchee, the Apple Capital of the World, with hotels, restaurants and many attractions of its own.
