Best NW Escape
Pybus Market named best in Pacific Northwest
Pybus Public Market has 1won First Place for “Best Farmer’s Market” in KING 5 television’s Evening Magazine “Best Northwest Escapes” for 2015.

While winners have not yet been formally announced, Wenatchee radio station KPQ AM got early word that Pybus Market had won. The annual awards are chosen by more than 33,000 voters throughout the Northwest who vote for their favorites in certain categories.

The market will be featured on Evening Magazine's "Best Northwest Escapes" segment that will air Monday, May 18 at 7:30 p.m.

Located on the Wenatchee waterfront just a short jog from the Apple Capital Recreation Loop Trail and the Columbia River, the market houses about 20 unique merchants ranging from a winery to a bakery to a flower shop to, yes, a fish market – although they don´t actually throw the fish like they do at Pike Place Market and, fitting for their Central Washington location, they also focus on meats. The market is a year-round enterprise housed in a renovated old building once used by the Pybus Steel Company. The indoor market is open 362 days a year so the skiers who come to Mission Ridge are just as apt to stop by as the thousands who visit Wenatchee for the Washington State Apple Blossom Festival each spring.

The market opened in May of 2013 after a one-year construction period and several years of development. According to Executive Director Steve Robinson, the market was first conceived as a legacy gift to the community by local civic boosters Mike and JoAnn Walker who were hoping to find a way to see the results of their generosity while they were still alive. They put up $5 million and got a another $5 million from a combination of the Port of Chelan County and the federal government.

“There was this gorgeous building that could be refurbished,” explained Robinson, “and it really came down to a kind of serendipity of everything coming together. It really came down to a desire to have a common meeting place for the people of this community along the river – something all of us could be very proud of.”
