Save a spot
Now reserve space for car on San Juans ferry
Visitors to Washington's San Juan Islands who 1 want to take their car on Washington State Ferries will have a lot easier time of it after Jan. 5, 2015, when the new "Save a Spot" reservation system goes into effect for the islands.

The program has already proven a success on other Washington State Ferries routes. It allows visitors to make reservations for their vehicles up to six months in advance of sailing. Various percentages of the total available space are set aside for various routes on the Washington State Ferries system.

Visitors during peak travel times of the year have long complained about long ferry lines to get space on the ferries to the San Juans out of Anacortes. It can add several hours to your travel time to the islands if you arrive during peak times without a reservation. With the new reservation system you'll have space on a particular passage reserved for you in advance.

The reservations are available for all vehicles except commercial vehicles. It guarantees passage for a particular sailing time to a particular destination. A credit card is required to make the reservation, although the account is not charged until it you take your trip. There is a no show fee for those who reserve and don't show up to use their reserved space.
