New visitor center
Wanapum Dam will show you how dams work
Add another tourist attraction to the list 1 of interesting stops on your way through Central Washington. The Grant County PUD is opening a new visitor center at Wanapum Dam.

If you ever wanted to see up-close how one of these huge dams operates, this is your chance. The visitor center is opening Dec. 1.

It's a good size center with 2,000 square feet and a theater and many exhibits focused on hydropower.

Among the new exhibits are some that show how the Columbia River has shaped Grant County over time. Watch the formation of the Columbia Basin on video and try your hand at generating your own electricity. Recreation centers are highlighted at the center and will show you where you can take advantage of the water activities possible because of the dam.

Wanapum Dam is about four miles south of the Interstate 90 bridge near Vantage. Head along the Grant County side of the river on Highway 243 and turn right on Wanapum Dam Road.

Best of all the new visitor center is free.
